Vaccines, Deworming and Parasite Prevention: The Timeline Before You Leave

A trip is also prepared on the health front. Depending on the destination, certain treatments come with non-negotiable waiting periods (rabies vaccine, rabies titer test): it’s best to see your veterinarian early to set the right timeline.

The vaccines to check

The rabies vaccine is required for virtually all international travel and only becomes valid after a waiting period (21 days after primary vaccination, under EU rules and in many other countries). Core vaccines (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza, leptospirosis) should be brought up to date based on your dog’s lifestyle and the destination. For some regions, vaccination against other diseases may be advisable: ask your veterinarian.

Deworming and internal parasites

A recent deworming is recommended before departure. For Ireland, Finland, Malta and Norway, a tapeworm (echinococcus) treatment administered by a veterinarian is mandatory within a precise window before arrival, and recorded in the dog’s travel documents (EU pet passport or health certificate).

External parasite prevention

Fleas, ticks and mosquitoes (leishmaniasis in warm southern regions) are more prevalent in certain areas. Adapt the external parasite protection (spot-on, collar, chewable tablet) to the destination and the season, and check that it’s current at the time of departure.
