Croatia Airlines: flying with a dog

📍 Croatia✈️ Star Alliance🐾 Cabin ≤ 8 kg✓ Verified 8 Aug 2026
★ Possible

Cabin and hold are both open with clear weight and crate rules, but the page contradicts itself on the cabin carrier's exact size, and the fighting-breed/brachycephalic tables leave one breed (American Bulldog) in an ambiguous spot.

MyDogCanFly is not affiliated with Croatia Airlines. The logo is shown for identification only. We do not sell tickets and take no bookings.

⚠️ Key restrictions

🐶 Fighting/listed breeds — hold banned
Hold forbidden for listed breeds
Croatia Airlines publishes two overlapping lists: dogs "not acceptable in the baggage compartment" (Affenpinscher, all Bulldog breeds except American Bulldog, all Pugs, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Boston Terrier, Boxer, Brussels Griffon, Bull Mastiff, Bull Terrier, Chow Chow, English Toy Spaniel, Japanese Chin, Japanese Spaniel, Lhasa Apso, Pekinese, Pit Bull, Shar Pei, Shih Tzu, Staffordshire Bull Terrier) and cats (British Shorthair, Exotic Shorthair, Himalayan, Persian, Scottish Fold) — plus a separate "fighting dog breeds" list (American Bulldog, Caucasian Ovtcharka, Dogo Argentino, Karabash/Kangal, Rottweiler, Doberman) requiring a reinforced CR82 container if accepted in the hold. American Bulldog appears as the one named exception to the Bulldog ban, yet also appears on the fighting-breed list — the two tables aren't reconciled.
😤 Brachycephalic breeds — cabin only
Cabin only, ≤ 8 kgHold forbidden
"Brachycephalic animals... can not be transported in cargo holds" and can only fly in the cabin under 8 kg — except the page gives the carrier limit as 118 cm (general rule) in one place and 115 cm (brachycephalic-specific clause) in another, on the same page.

🐶 Check whether your dog is snub-nosed

Croatia Airlines refuses brachycephalic (snub-nosed) breeds in the hold. What the airline itself wrote is in the restrictions above — that text alone says which breeds it turns away.

These 31 breeds are MyDogCanFly's own brachycephalic classification, heaviest first — it is not the list published by Croatia Airlines. Use it to situate your dog, then read the airline's own wording above and confirm with it before booking.

🌡️ Temperature & hold

Temperature limits: not disclosed

No temperature restriction or seasonal embargo is published on the Animals page or the Cargo page.

🦮 Assistance dog

Assistance dogs
Two overlapping sections exist. "Trained service dogs" (seeing-eye, hearing, disability, rescue and search dogs) travel free in the cabin on a leash, up to about 25 kg (heavier dogs possible on inquiry), and the owner must bring a muzzle "in case it is needed." A separate "Guide Dogs" section says the dog travels harnessed but "not muzzled or caged" — the two sections don't say whether they're the same category or genuinely different ones.

ℹ️ Good to know

⚠️ Two carrier sizes for the same bagThe general cabin rule caps the carrier at 118 cm summed dimensions; the brachycephalic-specific clause on the same page caps it at 115 cm. We publish both figures rather than pick one — ask when you book if your dog is flat-faced and your bag is close to the limit.
🌍 UK and Ireland rules run in opposite directionsNo pets Croatia→UK, but UK→Croatia is fine except from Gatwick; no hold pets Ireland→Croatia, but Croatia→Ireland is fine. Two different one-way bans on two different countries — an easy place to misread which direction you're flying.
📌 A flight-number-specific exceptionThe page carries this line: "The request on transport of pets in the cargo hold as excess/checked baggage on flights OU4001 and OU4002 is currently not possible" — a leftover operational notice naming two specific flight numbers, with no explanation given.
