Traveling to Guatemala with your dog

Difficulty: Easy — one health certificate, no prior permit for personal pets

Guatemala welcomes dogs, and its rules are handled by its own animal-health authority — the Directorate of Animal Health of VISAR (Viceministerio de Sanidad Agropecuaria y Regulaciones), part of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA), not the EU pet-passport system. A dog travelling with its owner from any country needs a veterinary health certificate issued in the country of departure, together with a vaccination record that includes a rabies vaccination and internal and external parasite treatment. No prior MAGA import permit is required for a dog or cat kept as a personal pet — the documents are presented to a SEPA-MAGA inspector at the border, who charges a physical-inspection fee. What exactly you must prepare still depends on your dog's country of departure and recent history, because the certificate must confirm the animal is healthy and free of disease. This guide explains what to prepare before you book your flight.

⏱️ Estimated preparation time

EU traveller

A few days if the rabies vaccine is already valid — you mainly need a veterinary health certificate from the country of departure plus the up-to-date vaccination record.

Listed country

From the United States: allow time to complete the bilateral export health certificate (available on the VISAR site) or to prepare the vaccination card showing vaccines applied 1 month to 1 year before travel.

Non-listed country

~1 month if a rabies shot is still needed: the vaccination record must show vaccines applied no less than 1 month and no more than 1 year before travel.

Times are indicative. The rabies antibody test alone adds a fixed 3-month wait.

⚠️ Important

  • MyDogCanFly provides general information — not veterinary or legal advice.
  • Only a veterinarian can confirm the exact procedure for your individual dog.
  • Requirements depend on: the country of origin, previous travel history, identification, vaccinations, the itinerary and the travel date.

Always consult your veterinarian before booking your trip.

🧭 How your dog's entry requirements are decided

The exact documents depend on three things — Guatemala (your destination) is only the first.

  1. 1
    Country of destination — Guatemala★★★★★

MAGA/VISAR runs a certificate-based scheme: a veterinary health certificate, a rabies vaccination and internal/external parasite treatment are always required. No prior import permit is needed for a dog or cat kept as a personal pet.

  2. 2
    Country of departure★★★★★

The certificate must be issued in the country of departure and confirm the dog is healthy and free of infectious-contagious and parasitic disease. Arrivals from the United States follow a specific bilateral export-certificate protocol.

  3. 3
Countries your dog recently stayed in★★★★☆

Your dog's recent residence and vaccination history determine whether its record is complete and valid: vaccines must have been applied no less than 1 month and no more than 1 year before travel. It is the dog's real history that counts — not only the last airport.

So read the requirements below as Guatemala's framework, then confirm your dog's exact origin and history with your vet.

✅ Entry requirements

Requirement Required? When Exceptions Official reference
Identification (microchip) Not published MAGA/VISAR's published requirements do not mention a microchip. The health certificate identifies the animal by name, age, sex, breed, colour and other physical characteristics. A microchip is not required by VISAR but is strongly advised for identification, for the return trip and because most airlines require it. MAGA/VISAR — Requirements for the entry of pets (dogs and cats)
Rabies vaccination Required The animal must be vaccinated against rabies; this must be declared on the health certificate and shown on the vaccination record, with vaccines applied no less than 1 month and no more than 1 year before travel. No exception is published in the VISAR requirements. MAGA/VISAR — Requirements for the entry of pets (dogs and cats)
Rabies antibody test Not required MAGA/VISAR's published requirements for dogs do not include a rabies antibody test. Whether one is requested for specific high-risk origins is not published — confirm with VISAR before travel. MAGA/VISAR — Requirements for the entry of pets (dogs and cats)
Veterinary health certificate Required Present the original export sanitary certificate from the country of origin, or a health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian in the country of origin. It must state the pet's name, age, sex, breed, colour and physical characteristics; the vaccines applied and deworming; and declare the animal was examined, is healthy and free of infectious-contagious and parasitic disease and vaccinated against rabies. The vaccination card must be attached, showing vaccines applied no less than 1 month and no more than 1 year before travel. MAGA/VISAR — Requirements for the entry of pets (dogs and cats)
Internal & external parasite treatment Required The animal must be treated against endoparasites and ectoparasites with products approved by the country of origin, and this must be stated on the certificate. No specific treatment window (e.g. tapeworm/Echinococcus) is published — a general internal/external parasite treatment is required. MAGA/VISAR — Requirements for the entry of pets (dogs and cats)
Arrival from the United States (bilateral protocol) Conditional From the US, comply with the agreed 'Health Certificate for the Export of Dogs and Cats from the United States to Guatemala' (available on the VISAR site), or provide a copy of the vaccination card showing vaccines applied no less than 1 month and no more than 1 year before travel. US-accredited veterinarians can issue and have the certificate endorsed digitally by USDA-APHIS (VEHCS). MAGA/VISAR — US export protocol; USDA APHIS — Pet travel to Guatemala
Import permit / advance authorization Not required for dogs and cats No prior MAGA import permit is required for a dog or cat travelling as a personal pet; the documents are presented to the SEPA-MAGA inspector at the border. MAGA requires a valid import permit before shipment for pets other than dogs and cats (per USDA APHIS). Commercial imports are separate — confirm with VISAR. USDA APHIS — Pet travel to Guatemala; MAGA/VISAR requirements
Border inspection & fee Required Documents are checked by a SEPA-MAGA (Agricultural Protection Service) inspector at border posts, and the pet is physically inspected. A physical-inspection fee of USD 14 applies, under Ministerial Agreement 114-2018. It is recommended to carry three sets of copies of the requested documents. MAGA/VISAR requirements; Ministerial Agreement 114-2018
Minimum age / puppies Not published MAGA/VISAR does not publish a minimum entry age. In practice a dog must carry a rabies vaccination applied at least 1 month before travel, which sets a practical lower bound. Airline age rules and your home country's return rules may be stricter. MAGA/VISAR — Requirements for the entry of pets (dogs and cats)
Quarantine Not published No routine quarantine is set out in the published requirements; entry is handled through document review and a physical inspection at the border. Handling of a non-compliant or sick animal on arrival is not detailed in the published requirements — confirm with VISAR. MAGA/VISAR — Requirements for the entry of pets (dogs and cats)

🌍 Rules according to your dog's origin

From the EU

Standard — a personal pet from any country

A dog arriving from any country must carry an export sanitary certificate from the country of origin, or a health certificate from a licensed veterinarian there. It states the dog's name, age, sex, breed, colour and physical characteristics, records the vaccines applied and the deworming, and declares the animal was examined, is healthy, free of infectious-contagious and parasitic disease and vaccinated against rabies. The vaccination card must be attached, showing vaccines applied 1 month to 1 year before travel. No prior import permit is needed for a personal pet; documents are presented to a SEPA-MAGA inspector at the border with a USD 14 inspection fee.

From a listed country

Arriving from the United States — bilateral protocol

From the United States a specific protocol applies: comply with the agreed 'Health Certificate for the Export of Dogs and Cats from the United States to Guatemala' (available on the VISAR website), or provide a copy of the vaccination card showing vaccines applied no less than 1 month and no more than 1 year before travel. USDA-accredited veterinarians can complete the certificate and obtain APHIS digital endorsement through VEHCS before departure.

From a non-listed country

Vaccination timing & practical reminders

Because vaccines must have been applied no less than 1 month before travel, plan a first rabies shot at least a month ahead. MAGA/VISAR does not publish a minimum entry age, a microchip rule or a rabies antibody-test rule for dogs — but confirm your dog's situation with your vet and, if in doubt, directly with VISAR. VISAR also advises checking the transport company's own requirements and the destination authorities in advance, and carrying three sets of document copies.

🛬 Arrival

What happens when your dog reaches Guatemala centres on the border document check and physical inspection.

  • Documents are required by a SEPA-MAGA (Agricultural Protection Service) inspector at the border post.
  • The pet is physically inspected, and a USD 14 physical-inspection fee applies (Ministerial Agreement 114-2018).
  • Carry the original export sanitary certificate (or licensed-vet health certificate) plus the vaccination card; arrivals from the US follow the bilateral protocol.
  • VISAR recommends bringing three sets of copies of the requested documents.
  • No prior MAGA import permit is required for a dog or cat kept as a personal pet.
  • Airlines have their own crate, breed and booking rules — confirm them separately before you fly.

🚫 Restricted dogs

Guatemala has no breed-specific import ban published by MAGA/VISAR. Keeping certain breeds is instead regulated by the Law for the Control of Dangerous Animals (Decree 22-2003), which governs ownership within the country rather than entry at the border.

Category 1

No dog breed is prohibited from entering Guatemala under the published entry rules. Any dog meeting MAGA/VISAR's certificate, vaccination and parasite-treatment requirements may be imported regardless of breed.

Category 2

Under Decree 22-2003, some breeds are classified for ownership control: 'highly dangerous' (Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Terrier, Tosa Inu) and 'dangerous' (including Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Dogo Guatemalteco, Fila Brasileiro, Doberman, Akita, Bullmastiff, English Bull Terrier, American Bulldog and others). Keeping them requires an administrative licence from the departmental Gobernación, third-party liability insurance of at least Q100,000, and a leash under 2 m plus muzzle in public; highly dangerous dogs undergo a socialisation test from 18 months of age. This affects keeping, not entry.

So no breed is refused entry for its breed alone, but if you will live in Guatemala with a listed breed you must comply with Decree 22-2003. Confirm current national and local rules, and your airline's breed policy, before booking.
