Traveling to Egypt with your dog
Egypt welcomes pet dogs, and its entry rules are set by its own veterinary authority — the General Organization for Veterinary Services (GOVS), part of the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation — not by the EU framework. The core requirements are the same wherever you fly from: a valid rabies vaccination, an official international veterinary health certificate issued shortly before departure, and a veterinary inspection on arrival. A microchip is recommended for identification. Good news for many travellers: Egypt does not require a rabies antibody (blood) test to enter from any country. What changes with your origin is mainly the disease situation of your departure country, which the health certificate must reflect. This guide explains exactly what to prepare before you book your flight.

⚠️ Important
- MyDogCanFly provides general information — not veterinary or legal advice.
- Only a veterinarian can confirm the exact procedure for your individual dog.
- Requirements depend on: the country of origin, previous travel history, identification, vaccinations, the itinerary and the travel date.
Always consult your veterinarian before booking your trip.

🧭 How your dog's entry requirements are decided
The exact documents depend on three things — Egypt (your destination) is only the first.
- 1 Country of destination — Egypt★★★★★
Egypt applies its own GOVS scheme: a valid rabies vaccination and an official international veterinary health certificate are always required, and every dog is inspected on arrival. No rabies antibody test is required.
- 2 Country of departure★★★★★
The health certificate must confirm your dog does not come from an area under rabies restriction. The disease status of your departure country shapes what the official vet must certify.
- 3 Countries your dog recently stayed in★★★★☆
A recent stay in a rabies-quarantined or high-risk area can trigger extra scrutiny at the airport. It is your dog's real origin and history that count — not only the last airport.
So read the requirements below as Egypt's framework, then confirm your dog's exact origin and history with your vet.
✅ Entry requirements
| Requirement | Required? | When | Exceptions | Official reference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ISO microchip | Recommended | ISO 11784/11785 chip, ideally implanted before the rabies vaccination so records match. | Egypt does not make the microchip mandatory for entry, but it is strongly advised for identification. Tattoos are not accepted. | GOVS / USDA APHIS Egypt export health certificate |
| Rabies vaccination | Required | Given at least 30 days before arrival and still valid — the dog must arrive no later than 11 months after the shot (within the 1-year validity). | First rabies shot may be given from 12 weeks of age; puppies must be at least 4 months old to travel. | GOVS; USDA APHIS Egypt health certificate |
| Rabies antibody test | Not required | — | Egypt does not require a rabies antibody (titer) test to enter from any country. | Embassy of Egypt (Washington) — Bringing Pets |
| Other core vaccinations | Required for dogs | Distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus and parainfluenza, according to the origin country's disease status. | Recorded in the vaccination booklet and reflected on the health certificate. | GOVS import requirements |
| Official veterinary health certificate | Required | International/export health certificate completed by a licensed vet just before travel and endorsed by the origin country's official (government) veterinary authority. | Short validity (about 10–14 days) and must still be valid on arrival; it must state the dog is healthy and not from a rabies-restricted area. | GOVS; USDA APHIS Egypt health certificate |
| Internal & external parasite treatment | Required | Endo- and ecto-parasite treatment by a licensed vet shortly before departure. | Recorded on veterinary documents; treatment typically considered valid for a few days. | GOVS import requirements |
| Import approval / advance notification | Conditional | Usually not required for a personal pet dog, but GOVS may request prior import approval in some cases. | Confirm with the airline and GOVS before travel, especially for multiple animals or commercial import. | GOVS (Ministry of Agriculture) |
| Arrival veterinary inspection | Required | GOVS veterinary quarantine officers inspect every arriving dog at the airport and check the documents. | If the dog shows signs of contagious disease, further examination or a short quarantine may be imposed. | GOVS Veterinary Quarantine (WOAH) |
| Puppies / minimum age | At least 4 months | A puppy cannot travel on its mother's vaccination; it needs its own valid rabies shot (from 12 weeks) plus the 30-day wait. | In practice this makes the minimum travelling age about 4 months. | GOVS import requirements |
| Quarantine | Not routine | No automatic quarantine when documents are complete and the dog is healthy on inspection. | A quarantine of up to about 15 days may be imposed if disease is suspected or paperwork is deficient. | GOVS Veterinary Quarantine (WOAH) |
🌍 Rules according to your dog's origin
From Europe / the EU
There is no EU pet-passport shortcut into Egypt: the EU passport is not an Egyptian document. A dog from Europe needs a valid rabies vaccination (at least 30 days old), the core dog vaccinations, parasite treatment and an official international veterinary health certificate endorsed by the government vet before departure. No antibody test is required.
From a rabies-controlled country
From countries with a controlled rabies situation (United States, Canada, Gulf states, most of Europe and others), the base scheme applies: microchip (recommended), valid rabies vaccination, core vaccinations, parasite treatment and an endorsed health certificate. No blood test, and normally no quarantine on arrival if the dog is healthy and documents are in order.
From a high-rabies-risk country
Egypt does not add a mandatory antibody test even for high-risk origins, but the health certificate must confirm the dog is not from an area under rabies restriction and has not been exposed to rabies. Dogs from a rabies-quarantined zone may be refused or held for examination. Expect closer scrutiny at the airport and keep original documents ready.
🛬 Arrival
When your dog reaches Egypt, GOVS veterinary quarantine handles the check at the airport.
- GOVS is the sole authority that inspects arriving pets and issues/clears veterinary documents at ports of entry.
- Present the original vaccination booklet, microchip record and the endorsed health certificate — carry originals, not copies.
- The dog must be free of signs of contagious disease at inspection; a healthy dog with complete papers is normally cleared without quarantine.
- Arrive on a weekday during office hours where possible, to ensure timely clearance through customs and the on-duty state vet.
- If documents are missing or the dog looks unwell, GOVS may order further examination, a short quarantine (up to ~15 days), or refuse entry.

🚫 Restricted dogs
Egypt regulates dangerous dogs under Law 29/2023 on the possession of dangerous animals and dogs, enforced by GOVS. The list of prohibited breeds was later narrowed by ministerial decree, splitting affected breeds into an outright-banned group and a licence-required group.
Banned breeds: a 2024 ministerial decree (Official Gazette) narrowed the prohibited list to three breeds — the Fila Brasileiro (Brazilian Mastiff), the South African Boerboel, and the Presa Canario (Dogo Canario). These may not be kept or imported.
Licence-required (restricted) breeds: around 16 breeds — including the pit bull, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, boxer, husky, Caucasian Shepherd, bullmastiff, Doberman, Alaskan Malamute, Great Dane, Akita, American Bully, Alabai (Central Asian Shepherd), Cane Corso, Dogo Argentino and Tosa Inu — are allowed only under a government safety/licensing process, and may be confiscated if not licensed. Confirm current status with GOVS before travelling.
Breed rules have changed repeatedly since 2023; before booking, verify the current banned and licence-required lists directly with GOVS or an Egyptian consulate, as the exact breeds can be updated by decree.
