Traveling to Kenya with your dog
Kenya welcomes pet dogs, but entry is controlled by its own veterinary authority — the Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS), part of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development — under the Animal Diseases Act (Cap. 364) and the Rabies Act (Cap. 365). No dog may arrive without an import permit obtained in advance from the DVS or a Kenyan diplomatic mission. Every dog needs a valid rabies vaccination certificate and a veterinary surgeon's certificate, signed no more than five days before departure, confirming the dog is free of clinical signs of any contagious or infectious disease. Kenya's published conditions do not require a rabies antibody test. What changes with your origin is mainly whether an extra government-vet certificate is needed and whether your country is on Kenya's short list of exempted rabies-free countries. This guide explains each step before you book your flight.

⚠️ Important
- MyDogCanFly provides general information — not veterinary or legal advice.
- Only a veterinarian can confirm the exact procedure for your individual dog, and the DVS sets the exact conditions on your import permit.
- Requirements depend on: the country of origin, previous travel history, identification, vaccinations, the itinerary and the travel date.
Always consult your veterinarian before booking your trip.

🧭 How your dog's entry requirements are decided
The exact documents depend on three things — Kenya (your destination) is only the first.
- 1 Country of destination — Kenya★★★★★
Kenya always requires an advance import permit from the DVS, a valid rabies vaccination certificate and a veterinary surgeon's certificate signed within 5 days of departure. Rules flow from the Animal Diseases Act (Cap. 364) and the Rabies Act (Cap. 365).
- 2 Country of departure★★★★★
If you fly directly from an exempted rabies-free country (Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, UK), the rabies-certificate condition is waived. From everywhere else the full set of certificates applies.
- 3 Countries your dog recently stayed in★★★★☆
A recent rabies vaccination (under 6 months old) triggers an extra certificate from a government vet confirming no rabies within 30 miles of your dog's place of origin in the past six months. Your dog's real origin and history count.
So read the requirements below as Kenya's framework, then confirm your dog's exact origin and history with your vet — the import permit lists the precise conditions.
✅ Entry requirements
| Requirement | Required? | When | Exceptions | Official reference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Import permit | Required | Obtained in advance from the Directorate of Veterinary Services (Kabete) or a Kenyan embassy/high commission before the dog is shipped. It is a canine/feline import licence with limited validity (e.g. 30 days at the Kenya High Commission, London). | No exceptions — a prior import permit is required for all live animals. | Kenya missions — Import permit under Animal Diseases Act (Cap. 364) & Rabies Act (Cap. 365) |
| ISO microchip | Recommended | An ISO 11784/11785 15-digit microchip is advised for identification, ideally implanted before the rabies vaccination so records match. | Kenya's published import conditions do not make the microchip mandatory for entry, but it is strongly recommended. | Kenya import conditions (microchip not listed as mandatory) |
| Rabies vaccination | Required | Valid rabies vaccination certificate stating the vaccine type, manufacturer, batch number, the animal's age at vaccination and the date. An inactivated (phenolized) vaccine is valid from 1 to 12 months after the shot; a live avianized (Flury or Kelev) vaccine is valid 1 to 36 months for dogs. | The rabies-certificate condition is waived for dogs imported directly from Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden or the United Kingdom. | Rabies Act (Cap. 365) — validity of rabies vaccines; Kenya missions |
| Rabies antibody test | Not required | — | Kenya's published import conditions do not require a rabies antibody (blood) test to enter from any country. | Kenya import conditions (no antibody test listed) |
| Government-vet rabies-area certificate | Conditional | Dogs vaccinated against rabies less than six months before arrival must also carry a certificate signed by a government veterinary officer of the country of origin stating there has been no case of rabies within 30 miles of the dog's place of origin in the preceding six months. | Not needed if the rabies vaccination is more than six months old at arrival. | Kenya import conditions — para. 1(b)(ii) |
| Veterinary surgeon's health certificate | Required | A certificate signed by a veterinary surgeon not more than five days before departure from the country of origin, certifying the dog is free of clinical symptoms of any contagious or infectious disease. | Kenyan missions also reference a health certificate not older than ten days before dispatch for live animals; use the timing stated on your permit. | Kenya import conditions — para. 1(a) |
| Carrier isolation certificate | Required | A certificate from the captain of the ship or aircraft certifying the dog did not leave the craft between embarkation and entry into Kenya and was kept isolated from all other dogs and cats throughout the journey. | Animals in transit for less than 48 hours are kept in isolation at the owner's expense and may only leave Kenya by air or sea. | Kenya import conditions — para. 1(c) |
| Arrival veterinary report | Required | For any animal entering Kenya other than by sea at Mombasa or by air at Nairobi, the arrival must be reported to the nearest veterinary office within three days. Give the veterinary department, Nairobi, prior notice for inspection on arrival. | Present the original import permit and certificates to the veterinary officer at the port of entry. | Kenya import conditions — reporting on arrival |
| Puppies / minimum age | Effectively about 7 months | The rabies vaccination certificate is only valid for dogs over six months old at the time of vaccination, and the vaccine must be at least one month old — so the practical minimum travelling age is about seven months. | Dogs from the exempted rabies-free countries do not need the rabies certificate and may not be bound by this age condition. | Rabies Act (Cap. 365) — validity of rabies vaccines |
| Quarantine | Only if certificates missing | Any animal arriving without the required certificates is kept in quarantine at the owner's expense for up to six months. | Not applied when documents are complete. Direct imports from the exempted rabies-free countries need not carry the rabies certificate. | Kenya import conditions — quarantine on non-compliance |
| Restricted breeds | No national import ban | — | Kenya's published import conditions do not set a breed-specific import ban; entry is controlled by permit and health requirements, not by breed. | Kenya import conditions (no breed-specific legislation cited) |
🌍 Rules according to your dog's origin
From Europe / the EU
There is no EU pet-passport shortcut into Kenya: the EU passport is not a Kenyan document. A dog from Europe needs the DVS import permit, a valid rabies vaccination certificate and a veterinary surgeon's certificate signed within 5 days of departure. If the rabies shot is under 6 months old, add the government-vet certificate about no rabies within 30 miles of origin. No antibody test is required.
From an exempted rabies-free country (Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, UK)
Dogs imported directly from Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden or the United Kingdom do not need to carry the rabies vaccination certificate required of other origins. You still need the DVS import permit and the veterinary surgeon's health certificate. This is Kenya's simplest path.
From all other origins
From any country not on the exempted list, the full set applies: DVS import permit, valid rabies vaccination certificate, veterinary surgeon's certificate signed within 5 days of departure and the carrier isolation certificate. A rabies shot under 6 months old adds the government-vet certificate about no rabies within 30 miles of origin. Arriving without the required certificates means quarantine of up to six months at the owner's expense.
🛬 Arrival
What happens when your dog reaches Kenya depends on your permit and the certificates you carry.
- Present the original import permit, the rabies vaccination certificate, the veterinary surgeon's health certificate and the carrier isolation certificate to the veterinary officer at the port of entry (air at Nairobi, sea at Mombasa).
- Give the veterinary department in Nairobi prior notice so an inspection can be arranged on arrival.
- For entry other than by sea at Mombasa or by air at Nairobi, report the arrival to the nearest veterinary office within three days.
- Any dog arriving without the required certificates is placed in quarantine at the owner's expense for up to six months.
- Carry original documents (not copies) and keep a set with you throughout the journey.

🚫 Restricted dogs
Kenya's published import conditions control entry through the import permit and health requirements, not through breed. There is no national breed-specific import ban in the DVS import conditions.
No prohibited-breed list: Kenya's import conditions do not name banned breeds. A compliant dog of any breed can be imported once the permit, rabies vaccination and health certificates are in order.
Kenya has general animal-welfare legislation (including the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act), but these are welfare rules, not breed import bans. We found no official breed-specific import restriction to report.
Because national rules can change, verify the current breed and import conditions directly with the Directorate of Veterinary Services before you travel.
