Traveling to the Maldives with your dog
The Maldives does not allow you to bring a pet dog into the country. The official Maldives Customs list of prohibited and restricted items for import states plainly that, while other animals may be imported with a veterinary health certificate confirming they are free of infectious or contagious disease, "the import of dogs and dangerous animals are strictly prohibited." There is no published admission procedure, quarantine route or permit that would let a dog enter — the ban applies regardless of the dog's breed, country of origin, vaccination status or travel history, and it applies to residents and visitors alike. Maldives Customs does not publish any exception for service, guide or assistance dogs, so you should not assume one exists. This page exists to give you an honest, sourced answer: a dog cannot be imported into the Maldives, and you will need to make separate arrangements for your dog before you travel.

⚠️ Important
- MyDogCanFly provides general information — not veterinary or legal advice.
- The Maldives officially prohibits the import of dogs; only Maldives Customs and the relevant Maldivian authorities can confirm your specific situation.
- Because dogs are banned, there is no procedure to prepare — do not rely on microchip, vaccination or quarantine steps to gain entry for a dog.
- If you believe a narrow exception (for example an assistance dog) might apply, contact Maldives Customs directly and in advance for a written decision — do not assume it is allowed.
- Requirements and prohibitions depend on: the destination (Maldives), the country of departure, your dog's identification, vaccinations, travel history, itinerary and date — but for the Maldives the destination rule alone (a ban) is decisive for dogs.
Always consult your veterinarian before booking your trip.

🧭 Why your dog cannot enter the Maldives
Entry requirements normally depend on three things, but for the Maldives the destination rule is an outright ban on dogs, so the other two factors cannot change the outcome.
- 1 Country of destination — Maldives★★★★★
The Maldives is decisive: its official Customs prohibited-items list states that the import of dogs and dangerous animals is strictly prohibited. This ban overrides every other consideration, so no amount of documentation makes a dog admissible.
- 2 Country of departure★★★★★
Normally the departure country's veterinary authority endorses a health certificate. Here it makes no difference: the certificate that lets other animals in does not lift the ban on dogs, and no exporting country is exempt from it.
- 3 Countries your dog recently stayed in★★★★☆
Travel history, rabies-free status or vaccination record would matter for a country that admits dogs. For the Maldives they are irrelevant to the import question, because the ban applies to all dogs regardless of origin or history.
So read this guide as a clear 'no' for dogs: the destination rule alone is decisive, and you should plan alternative care for your dog rather than a Maldivian import procedure.
✅ Entry requirements
| Requirement | Required? | When | Exceptions | Official reference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dog import | Prohibited | At all times. Maldives Customs lists the import of dogs (and dangerous animals) as strictly prohibited, with no published exception for breed, purpose or origin. | No exception is published. Whether any narrow exception (e.g. assistance dogs) exists is Unknown — confirm directly with Maldives Customs before travelling. | Maldives Customs — Prohibited & Restricted Items for import (Note: import of dogs and dangerous animals strictly prohibited) |
| Import permit for a dog | Not available | No permit route is published that would authorise importing a dog, because dogs are prohibited outright. | None published. | Maldives Customs — Prohibited & Restricted Items for import |
| ISO microchip | Not applicable | Identification cannot make a prohibited animal admissible; a microchip does not create a right of entry for a dog. | — | Maldives Customs — Prohibited & Restricted Items for import |
| Rabies vaccination | Not applicable | A rabies vaccination is not a route to entry for a dog, because the ban applies regardless of vaccination status. | — | Maldives Customs — Prohibited & Restricted Items for import |
| Rabies antibody test | Not applicable | No antibody test is published for dogs because there is no dog-import procedure. | — | Maldives Customs — Prohibited & Restricted Items for import |
| Veterinary health certificate | Does not lift the dog ban | For animals that ARE permitted, Maldives Customs requires a health certificate from an authorised veterinarian confirming the animal is free from infectious or contagious diseases. This requirement applies to admissible animals only and does not create an entry route for dogs, which remain prohibited. | The dog prohibition is stated as a Note directly alongside this animal health-certificate requirement. | Maldives Customs — Prohibited & Restricted Items for import (animal health certificate + dog prohibition note) |
| Quarantine | No route for dogs | No quarantine facility or procedure is published that would allow a dog to be held and then admitted, because dogs cannot be imported. | — | Maldives Customs — Prohibited & Restricted Items for import |
| Enforcement on arrival | Applies | Prohibited goods are defined by Maldives Customs as goods that are banned completely. A dog presented for import falls under this prohibition and would not be cleared into the country. | The consequences of attempting to import a prohibited animal (penalties, return, disposal) are not detailed in the reviewed Customs pages — confirm with Maldives Customs. Do not attempt import. | Maldives Customs — Prohibited & Restricted Items (definition of prohibited goods) |
| Service / assistance / guide dog exception | Unknown | Maldives Customs publishes no assistance-dog, guide-dog or service-dog exception to the prohibition. Its existence is Unknown and must not be assumed. | If you have a documented need, request a written ruling from Maldives Customs well before any travel. | Maldives Customs — Prohibited & Restricted Items for import (no exception published) |
🌍 Rules according to your dog's origin
Dog from an EU country
There is no simplified EU route into the Maldives. The Maldives is not part of the EU pet-travel system and does not recognise the EU pet passport for entry. A dog coming from an EU member state is still covered by the outright ban — it cannot be imported, whatever its microchip, EU passport, rabies vaccination or antibody-test status.
Dog from a rabies-controlled / listed country
Coming from a country with a strong rabies-control record does not help either. The Maldives does not operate a listed-country scheme for dogs, and the prohibition is not tied to rabies status. A well-documented dog from a low-risk country is still refused, because the ban is categorical.
Dog from any other country
The usual non-listed procedure (antibody test, waiting period, endorsed certificate, quarantine) does not exist for dogs entering the Maldives, because dogs are prohibited from the outset. No combination of tests, permits or waiting periods opens a legal path. Plan for your dog to remain outside the Maldives.
🛬 Arrival
Because dogs are prohibited, there is no arrival clearance process for a pet dog — the relevant fact is that a dog will not be admitted.
- Maldives Customs classifies dogs among goods that are 'banned completely', so a dog presented at the border falls under a full import prohibition.
- Other animals may be cleared only with a veterinary health certificate confirming freedom from infectious or contagious disease — but this route is explicitly not open to dogs.
- The reviewed Customs pages do not detail the penalties or the handling of a dog brought in breach of the ban; do not attempt to import a dog, and contact Maldives Customs in advance if you have any doubt about your situation.
- Any claimed exception (for example an assistance dog) is Unknown and would need explicit, prior written confirmation from Maldives Customs — it cannot be relied upon at the border.

🚫 Restricted dogs
The Maldives does not operate a breed-by-breed import scheme, because no dog of any breed may be imported. The prohibition is on dogs as a whole, not on specific breeds, so there is no 'category 1 / category 2' dangerous-dog classification for import purposes.
All breeds are affected equally. Maldives Customs bans the import of dogs and 'dangerous animals' together; every breed of dog, from the smallest companion dog to large guarding breeds, is covered by the same ban.
No breed is exempt. There is no 'accepted breeds' list, because the prohibition is categorical rather than breed-specific. Airline breed policies (for example on snub-nosed breeds) are a separate matter and do not override or soften the Maldivian import ban.
In short: this is a country-wide ban on importing dogs, not a restricted-breed law. Do not read the ban as applying only to certain breeds.
