Traveling to Fiji with your dog

Difficulty: Difficult — permit, tests and quarantine required

Fiji welcomes dogs, but as a rabies-free island nation it runs strict biosecurity controls set by the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) under the Biosecurity Act 2008. Your dog can only be imported directly from a BAF-approved country, must hold a BAF import permit obtained in advance, and must complete a mandatory quarantine at BAF's Post Entry Quarantine (PEQ) station in Koronivia, Nausori — home quarantine is not allowed. What you prepare depends heavily on where your dog is coming from: approved countries are split into Group A (rabies-free) and Group B (rabies present but controlled), and a dog from a country on neither list cannot be imported directly at all. Dogs from Group B must also be vaccinated against rabies and pass a rabies antibody test. This guide explains each pathway so you know exactly what to prepare before you book.

⏱️ Estimated preparation time

EU traveller

Group A (rabies-free countries, e.g. Australia, New Zealand and Pacific neighbours): the simplest path — import permit, ISO microchip and a minimum 7-day quarantine, but no rabies antibody test.

Listed country

Group B (rabies-controlled approved countries, e.g. USA, UK, EU, Canada): allow ~6+ months — rabies vaccination, a rabies antibody test taken 180–365 days before export, import permit and a minimum 30-day quarantine.

Non-listed country

Non-approved country (not on Group A or B): direct import is not possible — your dog must first move to an approved country and complete a six-month residency before it can qualify.

Times are indicative. The rabies antibody test alone adds a fixed 3-month wait.

⚠️ Important

  • MyDogCanFly provides general information — not veterinary or legal advice.
  • Only a veterinarian and BAF's import permit conditions can confirm the exact procedure for your individual dog.
  • Requirements depend on: the country of origin and its group, previous travel history, identification, vaccinations, the itinerary and the travel date.

Always consult your veterinarian before booking your trip.

🧭 How your dog's entry requirements are decided

The exact steps depend on three things — Fiji (your destination) sets a strict national scheme, but your dog's origin decides the detail.

  1. 1
    Country of destination — Fiji★★★★★

Fiji's biosecurity scheme applies to every dog: a BAF import permit, an ISO-compatible microchip, veterinary certification and a mandatory quarantine at the PEQ station in Koronivia, Nausori. Home quarantine is never allowed.

  2. 2
Country of departure and its group★★★★★

Dogs may only be imported directly from a BAF-approved country. Group A (rabies-free) needs only a 7-day quarantine; Group B (rabies-controlled) adds rabies vaccination, a rabies antibody test and a 30-day quarantine. A country on neither list is not eligible for direct import.

  3. 3
Countries your dog recently stayed in★★★★☆

A dog from a non-approved country must first move to an approved country or territory and complete a six-month residency there, plus the other veterinary-certificate conditions, before it can qualify for Fiji. It is your dog's real origin and history that count — not only the last airport.

So read the requirements below as Fiji's framework, then confirm your dog's group, origin and history against your BAF import permit and your vet.

✅ Entry requirements

Requirement Required? When Exceptions Official reference
Import permit (BAF) Required Apply to BAF in advance; a fee applies at lodgement and processing takes about 5 working days. The permit is valid for six months and its original must travel with the dog; conditions vary by country of origin. None — a valid import permit is required for every cat and dog before departure from an approved country. BAF Notice — Bringing in cats and dogs into Fiji (Sep 2024)
Approved country of origin Required The dog must come from a BAF-approved Group A or Group B country. The approved list is published in BAF's official notice. If the country is not approved, the dog must first relocate to an approved country and complete a six-month residency (plus that country's veterinary-certificate conditions), or BAF must be asked to add the country to a veterinary certificate. BAF Notice — List of Approved Countries (Groups A & B, Sep 2024)
ISO-compatible microchip Required Every cat and dog entering by air or sea must carry a microchip readable by an AVID, TROVAN, DESTRON or other ISO-compatible reader; it identifies the animal throughout the process. None — the microchip is the required means of identification. BAF — Bringing Cats, Dogs and Other Pets to Fiji (Identification)
Rabies vaccination Required (Group B origins) Group B dogs must be vaccinated against rabies per the manufacturer's recommendations at least 30 days before the date of export, and the vaccination must stay valid at least until the dog is released from quarantine. Not required from Group A (rabies-free) countries. BAF Notice — Importing cats and dogs from a Group B country (Sep 2024)
Rabies antibody test (RNATT/FAVN) Required (Group B origins) Group B dogs must pass a Rabies Neutralizing Antibody Titer Test (RNATT) or Fluorescent Antibody Virus Neutralization (FAVN) test with a result of at least 0.5 IU/ml; blood must be taken at least 180 and not more than 365 days before the date of export. The test result is valid for one year (365 days) from blood collection; if that window lapses, a further RNATT/FAVN ≥0.5 IU/ml must show continuation. Not required from Group A countries. BAF Notice — Group B rabies antibody test (Sep 2024)
Veterinary tests & treatments Required (set by permit) Various treatments and tests are required before leaving the country of origin; the exact list and the interval between treatments depend on the origin country and are set out on your individual BAF import permit. The specific fixed schedule is not published as a single list — it is issued case by case on the permit. Confirm the exact tests and treatments with BAF and your vet. BAF — Bringing Cats, Dogs and Other Pets to Fiji (permit conditions)
Veterinary health certificate Required A health certificate and veterinary certificates from the home country, completed and certified by a registered or government veterinarian and including all laboratory results and vaccination records, must accompany the dog. Permit forms must be completed and certified by a registered or government veterinarian in the exporting country. BAF — Bringing Cats, Dogs and Other Pets to Fiji (Documentation)
Entry point & transport Required The dog must travel by a direct or most-direct route, in an IATA Live Animal Regulations container (one animal per crate), and enter only at a designated port. Official crate seals must remain intact on arrival, and the dog goes straight to the PEQ station. Any transit must be through Group A/B countries under veterinary-authority supervision. Prior notice must be given to the BAF office at Nadi International Airport and to the Chief Veterinary Officer. BAF Notice — General conditions & transport (Sep 2024)
Quarantine (PEQ, Koronivia) Required Mandatory at BAF's Post Entry Quarantine station in Koronivia, Nausori: minimum 7 days from a Group A country, minimum 30 days from a Group B country. Home quarantine is not allowed; book kennel space 6–8 weeks ahead of departure. Trained service or assistance dogs are exempted from quarantine (assessed case by case); all other documentation still applies. The dog is released only after the minimum period if it stays healthy and all fees are paid. BAF Notice — Quarantine (Group A & B, Sep 2024); BAF — Post Entry Quarantine
Minimum age & pregnancy Conditional Cats and dogs below 4 months of age are prohibited, and females more than 21 days pregnant at the time of export are prohibited. None stated. From Group B origins the rabies vaccination and antibody-test timing push the earliest travel date well beyond 4 months of age. BAF — Bringing Cats, Dogs and Other Pets to Fiji (prohibited animals)

🌍 Rules according to your dog's origin

From the EU

Group A — rabies-free, simplest path

Group A covers rabies-free countries and territories such as Australia, New Zealand and Fiji's Pacific neighbours (American Samoa, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Kiribati, Nauru, New Caledonia, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Wallis & Futuna and others). Your dog needs a BAF import permit, an ISO microchip and a minimum 7-day quarantine at the PEQ station — but no rabies vaccination or antibody test, because these countries are rabies-free.

From a listed country

Group B — rabies-controlled approved countries

Group B covers approved countries where rabies is present but controlled — including the United States (with Guam and Hawaii), United Kingdom, Canada, EU member states, Japan, Singapore, South Africa and many more. On top of the import permit, microchip and veterinary certificate, your dog must be vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days before export and pass a rabies antibody test (RNATT/FAVN ≥0.5 IU/ml) taken 180–365 days before export, then complete a minimum 30-day quarantine at the PEQ station.

From a non-listed country

Non-approved country — no direct import

If your country is on neither the Group A nor the Group B list, your dog is not eligible for direct import into Fiji. You must first move it to an approved country or territory, where it completes a six-month residency and the other conditions of that country's veterinary certificate before it can travel to Fiji. Alternatively, an official request can be submitted to BAF to have a country or territory added to a cats-and-dogs veterinary certificate.

🛬 Arrival

Every dog imported by air follows the same path on arrival: a designated port of entry, then straight to the PEQ quarantine station in Koronivia.

  • Give prior notice of arrival to the BAF office at Nadi International Airport (+679-6720053) and to the Chief Veterinary Officer (+679-3312512) for clearance and PEQ accommodation.
  • The dog must be transported by the most direct route, with official crate seals intact on arrival, and taken immediately to BAF's Post Entry Quarantine station in Koronivia, Nausori.
  • Carry the original BAF import permit, the health certificate, veterinary certificates with all laboratory results, and vaccination records; the microchip is scanned to confirm identity.
  • Quarantine lasts a minimum of 7 days (Group A) or 30 days (Group B); home quarantine is never allowed and the dog is released only after the minimum period, if healthy and once all fees are paid.
  • If any condition is breached or not fulfilled, the dog will be reshipped out of Fiji or destroyed at the importer's expense; a dog showing rabies symptoms is euthanised and disposed of at the owner's cost.
  • Dogs arriving by sea (on vessels) cannot be officially imported and must stay onboard throughout their stay in Fiji waters, under a separate BAF entry permit.

🚫 Restricted dogs

Fiji prohibits the import of certain dog breeds outright, in addition to the biosecurity rules. A prohibited-breed dog cannot enter Fiji even if all other conditions are met.

Category 1

Prohibited breeds (cannot enter Fiji): Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Japanese Tosa, and Pit Bull Terriers — including American Pit Bull Terriers — or crosses of any of these breeds.

Category 2

Emotional support or comfort dogs are not treated as service or assistance animals and are not exempt from quarantine. Only dogs trained to perform a task for a person's disability, evidenced by a recognised accredited organisation (e.g. International Guide Dog Federation or Assistance Dogs International member), qualify as service or assistance dogs.

Applications to bring cats and dogs into Fiji are also assessed on a case-by-case basis, and entry may be refused depending on the animal-health status of the country of origin.
